Sobriety and Beyond provides recovery housing for men in New Brunswick, in the center of Middlesex County. Every resident works an active recovery program, follows the house rules and attends the weekly house meeting.
We are a recovery residence, not a treatment center. We don’t provide therapy or medical care. We provide a sober home where you can put what you learned in treatment into practice.

Sober Living and Treatment
Sober living and an intensive outpatient program work together. IOP provides therapy and clinical care during the day. The sober house gives you a safe place to come back to, with men working on the same things.
Going home after an IOP session to the place where you used is one of the hardest parts of early recovery. In a sober home, you can use what you learned in group that same evening, around people doing the same work. If you are not in an outpatient program yet, we refer you to IOP and outpatient providers nearby that fit your schedule and needs.

Our Location
Our homes are in New Brunswick, the county seat of Middlesex County in Central Jersey. Residents are close to NJ Transit trains to Newark and New York, Route 1, Route 18, the New Jersey Turnpike, daily AA and NA meetings, and jobs at Rutgers University and local hospitals.

Sober living in New Jersey is usually paid as weekly or monthly rent. Published rates for New Jersey sober homes start around $175 to $200 per week, and private rooms or homes with more services cost more. In most cases the resident pays rent from his own income. Families often cover the first few weeks while a new resident finds work. Health insurance, including Medicaid, generally does not pay sober living rent, because housing is not a medical service. Insurance and Medicaid can still cover the outpatient treatment, such as IOP, that you attend while living in a sober home.
Most sober homes require you to be sober at move-in, finished with detox and willing to follow house rules. At Sobriety and Beyond, residents must be committed to staying sober, have completed detox, follow house rules including curfew and the weekly house meeting, attend recovery meetings each week, and work, go to school, volunteer or actively look for work. Everyone starts with a confidential phone screening.
There is usually no fixed limit; residents stay as long as the house helps their recovery. Addiction research links longer support, at least 90 days, with better results, and many people stay six months to a year. Some residents at Sobriety and Beyond have stayed 10 months or more.
It depends on the house. Many sober homes use shared rooms to keep rent affordable, and some offer private rooms at a higher rate. Every bedroom at Sobriety and Beyond is furnished and has heating and air conditioning. Call to ask about current room options.
IOP is treatment. Sober living is housing. An intensive outpatient program provides therapy and clinical care several days a week while you live outside the program. A sober living home provides a substance-free place to live, house rules and peer support, but no clinical treatment. Many people do both at once.
Yes, and most residents do. Many IOPs offer morning or evening schedules so clients can keep a job, and the area has steady work in healthcare, education, restaurants and retail. Residents without a job are expected to look for one, go to school or volunteer.

A halfway house is often run by a treatment program or the justice system, and residents may be required to live there for a set time. A sober living home is an independent recovery residence where residents choose to live, pay rent and stay as long as it helps their recovery. Sobriety and Beyond is a sober living home.
